Women in Digital > Mentoring: FAQ

How is Mentoring different from Coaching?

Mentoring is a positive, developmental relationship. Mentoring is different from coaching or supervision. Coaching is primarily about performance and the development of specific skills. Mentoring is more broadly based, focusing on developing capability and often includes longer term help for career self-management.

What do we talk about?

Mentoring will be directed by the mentee’s needs and the Mentors capacity to lead. The mentee is asked to identify two or three goals or areas that they would like to focus on over the period of mentoring. The mentor’s role is to offer guidance and support and act as a sounding board for the mentee.

How long will it take to find a Mentor?

Depending on how specific your requirements are, it may take between 2-4 weeks to find a suitable mentor that matches your needs.

How do I get matched to my mentor / Mentee?

You will be matched to your mentor that is best placed to assist you. Your current role, organisation, mentoring relationship goals, professional challenges, personality and values are all considered.

What if I don’t like my Mentor / Mentee?

Its important to remember that you don’t have to like, or be friends with your Mentor. Your Mentor is there to help you achieve your goals and this may require your Mentor may challenge you, or give you constructive feedback that you don’t necessarily want to hear. The key is that you respect each other and make the effort to understand each other.

If you feel that your Mentor match is not accurate then we ask that you contact us to resolve the matter on a case by case basis. This may take some modification in the way the Mentoring is being conducted, or re-matching with another Mentor.

What are the reporting requirements?

Mentors and Mentees will be invited to evaluate the program midway and at the end of the program, plus provide a copy of their Meeting worksheets. Participants will receive certificates of completion.
