Women in Digital is passionate about harnessing the power of technology to solve problems and create a better future for all. Being driven by this purpose, we have become a cornerstone of the Australian tech community for more than 10 years with the key focus of improving gender diversity in the industry.
At Women in Digital, we believe that technology should be built by all people, for all people. That’s why we are passionate about creating an inclusive and welcoming community for all women in digital and diversity champions.
With an industry focus on all types of diversity, you may be asking why do we specifically focus on women and gender diversity? And to that, we answer, ‘We cannot think of a better place to start!’
In Australia, women make up 51% of the population and yet, women still only represent 29% of the technology workforce according to the 2021 ACS Australia’s Digital Pulse Report. As a way of comparison, other professional, scientific and technical services have female representation sitting at 48% – we have to do better!
With women making up over half of the Australian population, we see gender diversity as the gateway to other types of diversity. Looking more broadly, by focussing on gender diversity we can collectively achieve some pretty astounding things like:
- Add 6.6% to the market value of an ASX listed company by having more women in top-tier leadership positions
- Grow Australia’s economy by $1.8 billion every year on average over the next 20 years by increasing gender diversity in technology specifically
- Add $12 trillion to the global GDP by closing the gender gap
Whilst the broader economic benefits are great, what we’re focused on is what that means for our community and the individuals within it. For us, this shift means that more women are employed in higher-paid, fulfilling careers and often with the ability to work flexibly which reduces the need to choose between work or family.
Building inclusive products and services depend on greater industry diversity – and we’re here to support that change. We do this by:
- Connecting: we are driven to connect our community of women in digital and industry allies through our regular community events.
- Educating: we educate through storytelling. We share insight into the lives of women in the digital industry and illustrate how they’ve journeyed into the world of technology and digital.
- Empowering: we empower industry leaders by recognising them at our annual awards gala. By doing this we are inspiring the next generation of girls and women to follow in their footsteps.

We connect humans in the industry through quarterly networking and panel events. Through our events, we aspire to make digital and technology an inclusive place where everyone can belong.
We educate each other through telling the stories and sharing the careers of women in digital. We are passionate about telling the real stories (grit and all) of women in digital and realising the potential of individuals, organisations and the industry through diversity.
We empower women and companies through our industry-leading annual Women in Digital awards program, the WIDAwards.
